In Japan, the shishi is a noble beast who protects the entrance to the temple/shrine, and in some cases, the tomb. The Japanese "shishi" combines elements of both the Korean "Koma-inu" (Korean dog) and Chinese "Kara-shishi" (Chinese lion).
